This course consists of eight eLearning modules. Let’s have a brief look at the content of each module:
0. Introduction
The introduction will help you to get set up in the course.
1. Introduction to Natural Capital and Environmental Markets
A foundational module where you will learn how to describe natural capital and environmental markets, how these relate to land management, the benefits of them as well as potential consequences.
2. Natural Capital Fundamentals
In this module you will examine core concepts about natural capital - natural assets, ecosystem services, environmental services, benefits and value - and how they work together, why they are needed and the role and benefits for land managers.
3. Environmental Markets Fundamentals
This module will explain how natural capital and environmental markets work together, what’s needed for a market opportunity, the different market approaches available, and you will start looking at some of the current market opportunities and learn about future and emerging opportunities.
4. Environmental Markets Design & Operation
Now you have the foundations in place, you will explore how environmental markets are designed and operated (e.g. market objectives, stakeholders, governing mechanisms), the role and value of measurement, accounting, monitoring, verification and reporting, and the range of valuation and pricing methods.
5. Identifying and Evaluating Natural Capital
In this module, you will learn ways to identify and evaluate the natural assets, ecosystem services and environmental services on a property, how to determine the benefits and value provided and who receives the benefits and value.
6. Exploring Market Options
After identifying and evaluating the natural assets, it’s time to consider which environmental market options will be right for the situation. It will help you to understand the range of options available,
7. Planning and Deciding
Following on from Module 6, this module explores other key questions and considerations that land managers need to take into account in order to make a decision about which natural capital and environmental market options to commit to.
8. Delivery and Ongoing Requirements
This module covers what happens after a land manager enters into a market arrangement or transaction and what may be expected of them when participating in natural capital and/or environmental markets.
The course is not intended to provide all of the ‘mechanics/technical detail’ of natural capital and specific environmental markets - links and resources have been included for where to find more information.
